The pharmaceuticals can be used with an individual with autism as playing a minimal role in its management and as the treatment for autism is not curable, these drugs should be prescribed very carefully. These drugs should be used sparingly and only when there is a reduction in maladaptive behaviors which has been properly tried and have failed to bring about the desired changes. Another important factor is that these drugs should remain infrequent before age of 5 years and the practitioners for this should keep in mind that if there is in an increased incidence of epilepsy in autism while using the drugs then it might lower the seizure threshold.
